KUTANism

A Pottery Festival Dedicated to Kutani Ware
Kutanism (styled “KUTANism”) is a pottery festival devoted to Kutani ware, a type of ceramics traditionally fired in the cities of Komatsu and Nomi in Ishikawa Prefecture. Since 2019, the festival has promoted Kutani ware through a variety of programs. For its fifth iteration, Kutanism is once again offering a unique program of locally-organized events, including exhibitions, studio tours, and workshops.
While Kutani ware’s techniques, forms, and history have long fascinated pottery lovers, the tradition’s rich use of color is undoubtedly its most distinct characteristic. This year, the festival turns its attention to the color palettes of the places where Kutani ware is made. The theme for 2023 is “Tracing the Colors of Kutani.” By traveling to participating exhibition venues and workshops, visitors can explore the cities where Kutani ware is made and discover the unique colors of each site. Come experience the beauty of Kutani ware at its source.
