Jomura Yoko　

Jomura paints landscapes inspired by foreign films and scenes removed from her everyday life. Beginning in 2018, she started building original models of rooms to use as a basis for her paintings, adding a further layer of imagination to her work. The models are made of materials such as paper clay, twigs, and images found online. Her works are characterized by a unique brand of fantasy; although her subjects and motifs are fictional, she paints them as if they are real. The exhibition features an installation of new work by Jomura on the second floor of the defunct taxi company building known as Dentaku, which abruptly shuttered its operations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Jomura’s installation uses the abandoned offices as a canvas, creating the impression of stepping into a painting.

b. 1988 in Toyama Prefecture. Jomura received an MFA from the Kanazawa College of Art in 2020. Her past solo exhibitions include Keywords: Vertical and Horizontal (Tate to yoko no kiiwaado; Cafe & Gallery Musee, Kanazawa, 2023) and Welcome, Goodbye (Irasshai, sayonara; Art Gummi Kanazawa, 2022). Her work was shown in the group exhibition Closed Room, Airy Window, Awkward Montage (Civic Art Gallery Yada, Nagoya, 2022). Jomura received the Excellence Award at the 5th Hoshino Coffee Art Contest (2020).
