Masuda is an artist and visionary known for bringing kawaii (“cute”) culture to the world. His unique background and sense of color make him a distinct figure within the art scene, and his work stands at the intersection of art, fashion, and entertainment. Recently, Masuda moved from Harajuku—his base of operations since 1995—to New York, where he engages with increasingly international audiences. For the exhibition, Masuda has created a colorful tower installation titled Polychromatic Skin (Gender Tower) in the parking lot of the former taxi company building known as Dentaku. The Pop art-style tower is cute, colorful, and imbued with a strong message.

About the Artist

b. 1970 in Chiba Prefecture, Masuda currently lives in New York. He has been involved with theatre and contemporary art since the 1990s. Masuda was the art director for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s music video Pon Pon Pon and produced the Kawaii Monster Cafe in Harajuku. His past solo exhibitions include Colorful Rebellion—Seventh Nightmare (New York/Miami, 2014) and Yes, Kawaii is Art (Tokyo/Osaka, 2021). His work was included in the traveling exhibition The Doraemon Exhibition (Mori Arts Center Gallery and elsewhere since 2017).
