N-2 Nakajima Lock Control Room & Plaza (2-3-2 Nakajima, Toyama)

The Nakajima Lock is located at the midpoint of the
Fugan Canal. The lock uses a Panama Canal-style
lock-gate system to connect waterways that differ in
height by 2.5 meters, making it possible for boats to
sail between them. In 1998, the lock became the first
civil engineering structure built after 1926 to be
designated a national Important Cultural Property.
The area contains three exhibition sites: the Nakajima
Lock Control Room, the adjacent lawned plaza, and
the former taxi company building known as Dentaku.
Exhibited artworks feature two-dimensional images,
including paintings, and three-dimensional works
derived from the images. Visitors can also enjoy

The Iwase district, located at the terminus of the Fugan Canal, is known for its beautiful historic buildings. Iwase thrived as a port-of-call on the Kitamaebune sea route, which connected Hokkaido to Osaka between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The area contains eight exhibition sites, including the Masuda Sake Brewery and the former residence of the wealthy Baba family, which was one of the Hokuriku region’s five most prominent shipping merchants. Contemporary art installations enliven the nineteenth-century buildings along the old Hokkoku Kaido highway, transforming the cityscape where shipping merchants once kept their residences.
