Komuro’s sculptures appear to be made of light, soft vinyl. His work is inspired by the toy figurines and American comics he has loved since childhood. Komuro talks about “the Turtles” (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), “Batman,” and “Transformers.” The unique sculptural realism of his characters is a testament to his technical mastery. As a child, Komuro lived near a metalworking factory, and he used to watch the artisans at work. This experience eventually led to an interest in object-making. To Komuro, creation is a sacred act. For the exhibition, an installation featuring one of his giant imaginary wooden dragons dominates part of a sake brewery.
