Murayama’s art applies the concept of autopoiesis, a theory of the self-organization and homeostasis of living systems proposed by the Chilean neuroscientists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. Murayama creates everything from paintings and video installations to performance pieces, approaching works with an ecological perspective. He is known for his “textile paintings,” in which Murayama gradually weaves canvas from bast fibers, adds a coating, and then draws on the canvas, engaging in a continuous process that produces a growing artwork structure. His work takes a novel approach to drawing while questioning the role of human creativity in an age of high technology. For the exhibition, Murayama presents a mixed display of textile paintings, informatic textiles, and biological materials in two historic storehouses located in the Iwase district. The installation explores the potential of painterly expression arising from organically generated systems.
