Kawabe’s installation recreates his atelier, featuring a series of more than 206 caricatures of famous individuals. The portraits include historical figures, politicians like Vladimir Putin and Abe Shinzo, artists like Vincent van Gogh and Kusama Yayoi, celebrities like Miwa Akihiro, athletes like Ohtani Shohei, and fictional characters like Golgo 13. These figures epitomize the times of Kawabe’s life, like snapshots of contemporary society. He began his Headhunting series after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and his outrage over the invasion continues to drive the project. The title of the series is a nod to Kishida Ryusei (1891–1929), who playfully referred to painting portraits of acquaintances as “headhunting.”

About the Artist

b. 1955 in Ehime Prefecture. Kawabe began studying oil painting on his own in 1968. At age 17, he was diagnosed with juvenile unilateral muscular atrophy (Hirayama disease), which weakened his hands. After completing his graduate degree at Tama Art University in 1980, Kawabe held solo exhibitions while teaching art at high school and working at the Ehime Museum of Art. In 2001, he founded Atelier Soshinkyo, an NPO that supports the creative activities of people with disabilities. Since retiring in 2015, he has held numerous solo exhibitions. In 2022, he started painting Headhunting 200+ People, a caricature series of famous individuals.
