Kansui Park AreaKawai’s works encapsulate the duality of art and craft. While his use of clay and jar-like forms seems to speak to the tradition of pottery, his emphasis on expression and freedom of form gives his pieces the qualities of sculpture. Kawai’s polychromatic works evoke images of plastic toys and artificially colored ice cream and confections. Although trained as a potter, his background is in contemporary art, and Kawai’s works are conceptual. The exhibition reconceives Kawai’s creative process—from inspiration to finished work—as a physical studio tour. Armed with a flashlight, visitors are invited to enter a dark room and take a peek into the artist’s head.
