Ou Sansan (styled “O33”) uses sheep intestines as her primary medium. In Ou’s native Inner Mongolia, sheep are familiar animals tied to the region’s nomadic herding culture. Animal products from sheep and other livestock are used for food, clothing, and shelter, making up a vital part of the region’s resources. No part of the animal is wasted. Ou’s artistic practice is rooted in her dual identity as a Mongol with Chinese citizenship and her experience of growing up in two cultures. She creates textiles, sculptures, and installations that explore ambiguous boundaries, working with concepts such as inside and outside, life and death. Her work for the exhibition features a hanging installation of countless sheep intestines in a corridor connecting the inside and outside of a building. By passing through the corridor, visitors can experience the duality of life/death and inside/outside.
