Crafts and Art in Takaoka: Discover, Interact, Experience

The city of Takaoka, which was established at the foot of Takaoka Castle by Maeda Toshinaga, a powerful daimyo of the Kaga domain, has been a center of metal casting and lacquerware for over 400 years. The Takaoka Craft Ichibamachi (“Market Street”) is a craft- and art-themed event held in downtown Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. Visitors can witness the skill of artists and artisans, discover the charm of Takaoka’s culture and its residents, and enjoy local food. Primarily held in the historic Yamachosuji district, known for its earthen storehouse-style buildings, visitors can participate in workshops, browse or purchase works by Toyama-based artists and traditional artisans, and enjoy food stalls by local restaurants. After the opening ceremony in Otaya on Saturday, September 16th, the Yamachosuji district will be closed to traffic for the first time in four years on Sunday, September 17th, to create a pedestrian zone for event-goers.

Date: September 16th–September 18th

Address: Locations throughout Takaoka around Yamachosuji, Otaya, and Kanayamachi
