Come, Youths, to the Town of Craftsmanship—Behold the Artistry of the Masters!
Renew (styled “RENEW”) is Fukui Prefecture’s premier open-factory event. For the duration of the event, factories and workshops throughout the region open their doors to the public. Visitors can interact with artisans and experience the world of craftsmanship up close. Renew takes place in the Echizen-Sabae area, home to craft manufacturers specializing in the seven fields of lacquerware, washi paper, forged knives, fine cabinetry, pottery, eyewear, and textiles, all located within a 10-kilometer radius. The festival aims to bolster the region’s sustainability as a center of craft manufacturing.
Now in its ninth edition, Renew 2023 (styled “RENEW/2023”) features over 100 workshops and companies from seven different industries. Visitors can experience factory tours, hands-on workshops, and a variety of other programs. At the Renew Travel Stand, visitors can enjoy drinks in locally-made cups and ask staff members about visiting workshops and getting around. The festival also hosts Localism Expo Fukui, a market event where visitors can meet trailblazers engaged in socially significant work from around the country, as well as talk events on craft from various regions.
